Bio
Sok’iann, born in 1981 in Taipei, Taiwan, is a contemporary artist based in the San Francisco Bay Area, US. Throughout a practice that spans painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation, Sok’iann often creates a silently intense, poetical universe.
Renowned for her distinctive style as a 'symphony of controlled chaos,' Sok’iann innovatively explores geometrical creases and abstract ink washes on sculpturally unfolded canvases. Her unique method transforms her paintings into increasingly sculptural forms that extend beyond the traditional boundaries of the canvas.
Sok’iann’s art delves deeply into the nuances of human conditions, particularly the intricacies of identity and the contradictions between self-expression and societal conformity. In her paintings, viewers encounter a sense of "calm after the storm," where each piece delicately captures those ineffable inner emotions and states of existence. Through her ongoing series, each artwork becomes a profound dialogue between revealing and concealing the inner self. This exploration is facilitated through meticulously timed layering and the interplay of textures, presenting the dilemma of expressing one's true self while adapting to external expectations. Her creative process is not only an artistic expression but an invitation to deeply experience the complexities and struggles of identity and introspection.

We were not born to stay in one place, but I can always be inspired by the land that gave birth to me.
